Memorial Day Denim Sale Picks

It almost feels odd to me to post about sales during a time when we should be focusing primarily on those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, keeping us free to do (and shop) as we please. But I would be silly to think that it isn’t a well known time for some good deals as well. If you’ve been waiting for your new favorite pair of jeans, I’ve put together a list of my favorite denim sales to grace my inbox…many of which are calling my name as I type. So for all those national holiday deal hunters out there, shop away! But always keep the true meaning of today in mind. Whatever your Memorial Day weekend holds, have fun and be safe!

Rebellious Vintage Pieces from One Teaspoon

My first impression of One Teaspoon was pretty “meh,” I’ll admit…when festival season rolled around last year and those high-waisted, super short crotch hugging shorts became the norm, I noticed many coming from the brand along with boyfriend jeans so distressed that exposed almost the entire length of the legs of whoever wore them. Definitely not at all my cup of tea, although I was secretly kind of impressed on how many pieces the brand could carry while staying creative and holding such a huge part of the market, which was helped in part, I think, by the huge success of vintage denim. The brand started to grow on me a bit as I took the time to check out what else they offered (I mean what a sin to work in the denim industry and not at least get to know them a bit right?), and of course, my denim obsession expanded even further and I began to kind of peruse a distressed and destructed piece from One Teaspoon for myself to see what the hubbub was about.

The Revolve Memorial Day Sale is On

One of my favorite things apart from blogging itself is bargain shopping for items to share with all of you in my outfit posts! Apart from what is gifted for reviews and whatnot, I still can’t refuse a good deal, and the hunt is half of the fun. I pretty much never pay full price for anything because of this, and looking for a good sale (and online discount codes) is key. Revolve, one of my favorite stops for unique items and anything denim, is starting their Memorial Day sale a week early! If you’re aching to hit up all the sales that usually come along with this special time to honor all those who have fought hard for the country we live in (whether you look forward to holidays for the sales or not, it’s always important to remember), I snatched out all the denim pieces for your browsing pleasure, from all sorts of jeans cuts to jackets to shorts and even shirts. Art Tees and Tanks by Sociale Revolution

Art Tees and Tanks by Sociale Revolution

Art Tees and Tanks by Sociale Revolution

Here we go again with the art meets fashion thing! But who can blame me? There have been a lot of this lately, and they go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly. However, apart from the high couture, limited edition, hand-painted work such as that from the MADE GOLD x Yuki Haze collection, there lies a few other brands that allow an outlet for multiple artists to get their work out there through printed tees, tanks, and occasional other items like blankets, leggings or pillows for example. Society6 and The Coterie are an example, but I’m actually excited to bring back up a totally different one that works hard to kick it up a notch with fitted, premium style: Sociale Revolution! I last wrote about this brand almost two years ago when it was still in the works as a Kickstarter campaign, and now it’s been flourishing as a brand in full production.

Modern Takes on Denim and Indigo at Fab

I think it’s funny every time I go to write a post like this and realize I’m starting to feel a strong sense of Deja Vu…but that’s only because I have my favorite talking points and somehow there are more and more subject matter that fits within them popping up more often as the days and years go on! Once again, I’m highlighting how awesomely versatile the denim fabric is beyond jeans, and it’s pretty cool to see what artists and brands come up with. In all these posts I’m always calling back to previous ones that fit the content, so to keep it short, I wrote about other awesome unique uses of denim here, here (this one’s crafty), here, and here!

Charitable Hand Painted Denim by Rialto Jean Project

Charitable Hand Painted Denim by Rialto Jean Project

It is so exciting to me to see so many artist collaborations in the denim world. Denim on its own is a kind of art, and there’s no question that fashion and art go together hand in hand. For awhile, I only witnessed the merging of paint and denim as kind of a spinoff of denim’s roots as workwear…with paint splatters accompanying other roughed up details like distressing and even grass stains as a coveted fashion statement. In 2014, I worked with Dragonfly by J. Claire, a made-to-order brand that created custom hand-stenciled paint jobs on a variety of different denim washes. Last year, Nok Nok came out with their Summer of Love Collection for 2016, which features denim painted with artist Jackson Pollock’s unique drip technique. Adriano Goldschmied’s daughter Marta collaborated her brand MADE GOLD with artist Yuki Haze for a limited collection of painted denim this year, and just a few weeks ago I stumbled across Rialto Jean Project.

Rialto Jean Project is “an eco-friendly, philanthropic denim brand specializing in hand-painted, one-of-a-kind vintage product.” Founder & Creative Director Erin Feniger personally picks out rare and unique American-made vintage pieces and paints them herself, in an effort to support children through art! She paints not only denim, but also offers sweatshirts, military jackets, and more. All proceeds from the sale of her pieces go to support innovative art therapy programs at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and New York Presbyterian Hospital. Rialto Jean Project calls their initiative ‘Denim Doing Good’, to represent their dedication and hard work to the cause! I know I am thankful I was introduced to art at a very young age, so this project definitely resonates with me. I truly believe an introduction to the arts at a young age helps foster personal growth and creativity!

Shopbop is carrying a small collection of pieces from Rialto Jean Project, including this amazing, more modern piece from BLANKNYC! If you aren’t familiar with their Skinny Classique in Good Vibes, this jean has been stocked and restocked over and over through multiple online retail outlets due to it’s incredible popularity thanks to fashion bloggers everywhere. I have been seeing it circulating Instagram for almost a year now! I grabbed a pair for myself and can see the appeal, but the fact that Rialto decided to work with BLANKNYC to give this jean a whole new character is just so fitting and awesome.

Rialto Jean Project also worked closely with NYDJ for a pretty good sized collection of white denim that’s been painted in all sorts of eye popping colors. Check that out here!

New REFOCUS Bands from La Clé

New REFOCUS Bands from La Clé

New REFOCUS Bands from La Clé

Two Novembers ago I wrote about a little jewelry company I discovered called La Clé. It stood out to me because I love the concept of re-purposing old, otherwise unneeded and trashed items into new things, like jewelry! That is just what they do, with old vintage keys—customized to match your personal color and motto. I wore mine through many outfit posts (see one here), and I still find it to be a fun accessory to this day which continues to garner several compliments! The brand has innovated new key styles to fit various seasons or themes, and now, La Clé has a new release: REFOCUS BANDS to help you be more mindful of negative thoughts and turn them into positives!

La Clé states: “We produce up to 60,000 thoughts per day. 80% of our thoughts are negative. REFOCUS BANDS allow you to be more mindful and take control of your thoughts by simply flipping the band every time a negative thought overpowers you. Every flip helps encourage a positive thought that guides your inner voice in the right direction.” This is actually a pretty awesome concept, and similar to Positive Head‘s bracelets that are meant to literally snap out negative thought habits (which I love, I have one!), but this twists it in a whole new way with special mantras to recite when you need them. La Clé offers ten bands, each with a different color, design and message combo. Here are some of the best, below!

New Summer Releases from Diesel

New Summer Releases from Diesel

New Summer Releases from Diesel

Diesel is always known for their unique, eye catching designs for the seriously stylish folks out there, but I’m always impressed with their ability to offer a lot of classic and clean selections as well. Memorial Day is right around the corner already, and the brand has released several new items just in time for festival season or just some general, good old summer fun. The denim dress and overalls continue to rule, as well as distressed and broken in, loose fitting jeans for that perfect laid back look. I’m usually perusing the brand’s website for some new edgy denim looks, but I’m really liking a lot of these new dresses too.

Diesel‘s more adventurous and swanky line, Diesel Black Gold, also got the Summer treatment but in the usual dark and sexy way that the brand is known for. Special hardware, prints, cuts, fabrics, textures and other beautiful details adorn this new collection, and to me, everything on their website looks so beautiful together right now! I am a huge fan of black, and I’m digging the studded and heavily detailed leather jacket and dresses shown below.

Even though I’ve always enjoyed admiring and feeling inspired by what Diesel offers, it seems it’s all been taken up a notch and I could see myself wearing more from both brands than I remember from before! Here are some of my favorite Summer items from the Diesel and Diesel Black Gold collections.

“The new season’s denim wash trend has a touch of 90’s fade nostalgia with a smidgen of distressed rebellion. Our range of cool blue favorites allow the denim-lovers among us to rock the triple denim look this spring.”

Nomad’s Hemp Wear and Hudson Jeans

Nomad's Hemp Wear and Hudson Jeans - Front Shot 3

Top: Sequoia Sweater by Nomad’s Hemp Wear. Jeans: Hudson Barbara in Oympia. Boots: Steve Madden Troopa (Sold Out). Necklace: Third Eye Pinecones

Nomad’s Hemp Wear and Hudson Jeans

Days are just being strange as usual here in California. It was getting a little warmer for a bit as Spring hit, and now it’s getting cooler and drizzly for the weekend. I had been waiting for the temperature to drop a little bit to once again throw on this Sequoia Sweater from Nomad’s Hemp Wear, one of my current favorite tops. I can’t get enough of that shop! Along with it is a new pair of Hudson jeans I’m breaking in, and I think they might just be my new favorite skinny.

With all of the brands, famous and not as famous, that I’ve had experience reviewing and discovering at Denimology, Hudson is one of those brands that I have to revisit from time to time. Their fits are just amazing over my more athletic shape and I get a little obsessed with wanting to try all of their skinny and slim fit styles. I had been eyeing the high waist Barbara in Olympia for awhile, wanting to break away a bit from the lower rise fits for a bit and recently settled on this one. As usual, I sized down to 25 from my usual size of 26 since Hudson is known to be a bit stretchy, but this one was slightly more rigid and tough despite its tencel content. I did the usual dances and lunges to squeeze into them and they are breaking in quite nicely! The blue is dark but so pretty and vibrant, and they aren’t too high…just perfect, if you ask me! They stay put and I can tell they’ll only get better with wear.

Along with it all I’m wearing my favorite necklace of all time, from Third Eye Pinecones. I wrote up a little post about them awhile back, which you can see here! The boots are the Troopa from Steve Madden in Denim, currently sold out…it was another rad eBay find!

The Return of the J Brand Houlihan Cargo

The Return of the J Brand Houlihan Cargo

The Return of the J Brand Houlihan Cargo

I remember when skinny cargo pants came out in 2007 or 2008-ish. At first, like I am with most new trends, a little bit ‘meh’ about it. J Brand was the first, if I remember correctly, to come out with theirs, in the form of the Houlihan, and it took the celebrity world by storm as a super coveted style. Famous butts were seen traipsing around in them everywhere! It grew on me after awhile though, especially after I scored a pair by Rich & Skinny as well as a black pair by BLANKNYC. But by the time I decided I could do the skinny cargo thing, the trend already had started to fade, and it dropped off pretty quickly after that. The Houlihan was replaced by new and upcoming brands in Hollywoodland, and J Brand continued innovating new styles. I had just been wondering if the skinny cargo would ever return as an in-style thing, and lo and behold, I got a newsletter last week answering that thought. Daaamn, J Brand, back at it again with the Houlihan! Ok that was cheesy. Anyway, it’s awesome that this brand always seems to be leading this trend! This one’s available in two colors: Distressed Caledon, a dark army green; and Distressed Chrome, a pretty dark grey. It still all has the same details I remember, as a mid rise with cargo pocket details and seams down the front and back of the legs. It also includes moto-like stitching and paneling on the knees and trouser-like pockets on the back. And, don’t forget those zippers on the cuffs! It’s also made of ultra comfy luxe Japanese twill.
