For those who might have been following my reviews, you can tell I love skinnies. However, I’m falling hard for flares, which are this season’s fit. What’s a girl to do? If only someone would come up with a combination of the two…oh wait. Hello, AYR! This new-ish brand blew up last year and has been a favorite of mine since. I am very happy to revisit their amazing jeans! Hudson has the Baby Boot, Joe’s had a skinny micro flare, which was very similar to American Eagle Outfitter’s Skinny Kick jean—skinny all the way down to the bottom of the calf with a slight flare at the bottom. AYR though, I think has mastered the fit, keeping it skinny but very much flare! I could write the entire review in my first paragraph here, but I won’t…read on for an AYR Skinny Flare in Jac’s Jean review!
Here’s a refresher: AYR was founded by CEO Andy Dunn of popular menswear line Bonobos, which, like AYR, was built upon the concept of a great fit but mostly applied to khakis instead of denim. When Dunn joined forces with Maggie Winter (formerly the senior merchant of J. Crew’s retail division) and designer Jacqueline Cameron (of Calvin Klein/Madewell), they discussed their mutual shopper’s fatigue when it came to searching for the perfect fitting jean, and AYR was born. AYR jeans were (and still are) touted as the best fitting jean on various media outlets, and are made extra special with their amazing stretch, softness and shape retention thanks to the fact that they are constructed with the best premium denim fabrics around the globe. These jeans are meant to keep you tucked in and looking sexy, and are manufactured right here in sunny California—Los Angeles, to be exact! AYR also offers a home try on option, to make your denim shopping just that much more convenient. Order up to three sizes of any jean with a special discount code, and you’ll be temporarily charged just $1 per jean. Within two days you’ll have them in your hands, and one week to try them on and pick the best pair! Send back the ones that didn’t fit, and you’ll only be charged for what you keep. Brillance!
So anyway, back to the star of this review, the Skinny Flare. Oh man, where to I start? These really shined when I first tried them on. Like most super stretchy jeans, they looked a little small at first, but they gave in such a super luxurious fashion when I slid them on that I had to utter a little sigh…they are so ridiculously soft and stretched just enough to hug every curve without any waist gap or constriction. In other words, the 42% Cotton 31.5% Rayon, 8% Tencel and 1.5% Lycra fabric blend felt like heaven! The fabric is also the perfect thickness…I felt warm wearing them in the colder, foggy morning but they were thin enough to still keep me comfortable once the sun came out and decided to show California the usual heat! I’ve reviewed two other great pairs from AYR, The Skinny and The Ciggy, and although those were amazing as well, these are something else—even softer and stretchier, unless it’s all in my head! One other awesome thing about AYR that not many other brands offer is a choice in inseam. These are available in a 32″ or 34″, and since flares normally look more naturally fabulous in heels, I took the 34.” I’m glad I did! I often wear a 33″ in bootcuts when I want to wear flats with them, so that extra inch was perfect to comfortably wear some mid-heels with them. I love that these are a skinny fit, but are also real flares. The flare starts for me just below the top of my calf, still accentuating the shape of my legs, and they bell out to a modest but flattering 17.5 leg opening. At a 8.5″ mid rise, these sat comfortably over my hips and didn’t budge at all, all day, even when I squatted or leaned over. Win!
The photography on AYR‘s website is superb, and the colors are extremely accurate, but you really have to see these in person. In the house, I smiled at the pretty dark blue with subtle light vibrant blue fading and whiskering, but when I walked out in the sun, I jumped a little! It’s also hard to see in the photos that there are some subtle, beautifully done and natural-looking creasing above, below and behind the knees along with the proper fading. These are just beautiful! I wore them casually, but I almost felt like I was doing them a disservice. These are meant to be strutted around in, for real! I might just have to get one of AYR‘s nice clean, classic tops to go with them. The model on the site has a nice dressy casual look with a black loose fitting top and heels, and I’d say that’s just about as casual as they should go. Next time I go out to dinner, these will be my first choice. They are so nice that I decided I’d pair them them with my blue PVC embossed MeDusaBrand clutch for this review. This bag is seriously cool…I posted about them not long ago and they deserved another shoutout! It’s tough to find quality, vegan bags out there, and it’s important to have something for everyone on the market!
If you are looking for a flare but don’t want to get rid of your skinny jeans yet or are afraid of the ebb and flow of denim trends, the AYR Skinny Flare in Jac’s Jean has some serious versatility and longevity!
