Even though I’m a denim-head, I didn’t much mind the so-called “threat” that the athleisure boom imparted onto the denim industry. On one hand, innovations come when challenges arise, and jeans as we now know them are nothing like they were just a few years ago! On the other hand, there just have been some seriously cool activewear brands out there—I’ll admit I’ve ended up really digging my growing little legging collection and even now wear some active outerwear on a daily basis too. The comfort is one thing, but so many of the newest brands and styles are just so much more unique than regular apparel!
One other thing I love about a lot of activewear brands is their realization that the textile and apparel industries are some of the dirtiest out there in terms of pollution, and have made strides to adopt more eco-friendly practices. I guess it comes along with the concept of fitness, well-being and always striving to improve oneself…the environment definitely plays a part! ALO Yoga is a premium activewear brand found at large retailers such as Revolve, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Carbon38 and more, but they stand out in such a great way. “ALO” stands for “Air,” “Land” and “Ocean,” to begin with. They also use eco-friendly fabrics and solar panels adorn their Los Angeles headquarters, which is also paper-free. Employees are encouraged to drive eco-friendly vehicles as well, with electric car chargers offered in the parking lot. Their clothing itself is high quality and offers a modern, clean but fun touch! Here are some awesome pieces from Revolve, below.

Transitional Activewear by Crane & Lion
First off, I apologize for the missed post on Monday. I was taking a much-needed break and decided to not fret about missing one day as I enjoyed my Sunday relaxation day! I’m actually mulling over the idea of posting whenever I see interesting things, instead of aiming for Monday, Wednesday and Friday (although it’s not always that difficult to stick to that). Maybe Tuesday and Thursday? Or no schedule at all? What are your thoughts?
Anyway, on to our current regular scheduled posting…
You’ve probably been seeing me posting more and more about activewear, despite my initial hatorade as it slowly replaced jeans as go-to bottoms last year (although I still would rather throw on my favorite pair of skinnies and save leggings for the gym or at home). I was never a big Lululemon fan, but now there are SO MANY new ones popping up that I’m kind of falling for (thank you Facebook ads! You’re not all that bad). The latest to catch my attention is Crate & Lion, with the Long Sleeve Tee in Zinfandel topping my favorites list when I first checked out their line. This brand blends the line between fitness and fashion, moving activewear to the “front of our closets” with hand-picked fabrics for optimal support, movement, comfort, versatility, quality and style. The brand name comes from two poses in Yoga: the Crane being one that requires a lot of stamina and strength, which “inspires us to take risks and find our edge.” The Lion pose helps relieve tension through breathing. Crane and Lion combined together “reflects how we live our lives: some days want to push the limit and other days, we need to recover.”

Get Moving with Zobha
Being the fitness buff that I am, I enjoy the athleisure side of the industry, even if it does often knock heads in competition with my beloved denim industry. However, it’s hard to ignore the fact that there are some seriously awesome designs out there…more so than ever, or so it seems. When I shop for pieces to sweat in, I’m not looking for anything special, just items that will stand the test of time and have a least a little bit of a stylistic appeal. But I don’t go designer, I go for the well known fitness brands like Asics, Fila, New Balance, and Puma. Designer pieces like these, by Zobha, to me are too pretty to be getting down and dirty in! I discovered Zobha on event-based sale site RueLaLa, where I scored a sweet jacket last week, and I’m in love. It has the perfect quality to wear every day and I can’t imagine wearing it to the gym or even on a hike, at all. This is the interesting part of the premium activewear industry…it really is bridging the gap between fitness and lifestyle. Everything here at Zobha I would wear everywhere other than the gym, except for the obvious pieces like bras, leggings, and some of the tops with built in bras (and even some of those I’d wear normally, as I wear shelf bra tops on weekends). I guess you could say I understand at least part of the competition now, even though I still don’t quite get the idea of wearing leggings everywhere. At least here with Zobha, I understand the everyday appeal of just about everything up top. How cool are these? They are so uniquely creative! Here are my favorites!
“Zobha’s new look pays tribute to a diverse array of women. Whether edgy, modern or urban, our contemporary pieces effortlessly infuse fitness and fashion into every lifestyle.”
“Offering a hybrid of high-tech performance and runway-inspired fashion, Zobha is poised to become a cross-over contemporary brand for the modern woman. Taking her straight from the gym to the runway in casual chic style.”
“As the first and only brand combining patented shape-optimizing technology with edgy, couture-inspired design, Zobha paves the way for fashion-forward fitness.”
“Our innovative style and attention to on-trend detail meets the needs of today’s modern woman who active in the worlds of both fitness and fashion.”

Resolution Worthy Activewear from Shopbop
Happy New Year everyone! It’s back to the grind for me…and back to my usual blogging consistency! I don’t really do the resolutions thing, as I tend to find what makes me happy and feel fulfilled and keep it up through the year. But, why not have a good reason to start fresh on your goals? As someone who frequents the gym and enjoys running (and overall does my best to stay fit for the sake of my sanity), one of my favorite apparel categories to shop is activewear. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed the explosion of awesome prints and designs on the market, especially this year when activewear stepped up and became a direct competition for denim as everyday wear. I usually stick to the tried and true, well known activewear brands, like Puma, Asics, and Fila, but Shopbop is always pumping out gorgeous and super innovative pieces from top quality apparel designers such as Mara Hoffman and Zara Terez. Of course, these brands overlap the activewear industry, so it makes sense, but each piece is totally representative of their respective designers. For the new year, Shopbop has released a new activewear line to make keeping our resolutions to get fit or stay fit a heck of a lot more fun (and stylish), and I was just admiring ALL OF IT! So I figured I’d put together my favorite pieces here, from both premium contemporary brands such as the above stated, as well as a few of my favorite yoga and legging brands like Onzie! Whether or not these are prices you enjoy, they are fun to look at…and I know activewear is definitely one of those categories where “you get what you pay for” holds true since this unique type of fabric has a pretty hefty job: to keep you dry, provide support and compression (in some cases) and last through years of workouts! I’ve learned this many times from my own experiences. But either way, enjoy, I hope you like them too.

Turn Up Your Awesome with TUYA
I’m finding it awesome and kind of exciting that this week’s posts seem to fall right in line with the fact that Burning Man is occurring as I type. Since I can’t attend this year, at least I’m living it vicariously through a few blog posts! Today’s post elaborates on a brand I highlighted on a previous post, Party Worthy Athletic Leggings. Since this brand is far more deep and colorful than a little feature as part of a collection of features, I figured it definitely warranted its own post, and many more in the future. TUYA, which stands for Turn Up Your Awesome, is an incredible brand that represents charity first, and apparel/accessories second. I discovered them at Lucidity Festival this year, and I’ve been a giant fan since. I’ve been in touch with them to help them get their word out, so I’ll be writing a lot more about them later on!
TUYA is run by Founder/CEO/Director of Awesomeness Drew Stern, and is “is a lifestyle empowerment brand on a mission to challenge and encourage people to live their lives to their truest & highest selves, while bringing awareness and solutions to important social causes.” The brand was born when Drew traveled to Guatemala in 2010 and met Juanita, a local woman who made a living off baking and selling bread. Drew fell in love with her ambitions, and began creating tee shirts featuring her face and sales pitch (“¿Quiree Paaaan?”) to help her out. Ten percent of sales went to her, and Drew quickly realized how beneficial it is to be selfless, and developed a mission that whatever he brought into the world would also be to also benefit the greater good. TUYA was born shortly after!

Party Worthy Athletic Leggings
Man has the athletic apparel industry taken off! I’m sure these delectably patterned leggings have existed for awhile, but it seems there have been more popping up ever since the fashionable athletes amongst us took the athleisure trend seriously and wanted to look good while breaking a sweat as well as while hanging out or running errands. These pretty designs seem to center around the yoga industry, but I’m seeing more of them at parties and music festivals than anywhere else! I grabbed a pair of Onzie leggings for Lightning In a Bottle earlier this year, and I have to say I’ve fallen for it too. I became sort of obsessed with printed jeans recently too, so I guess it only made sense for printed leggings to follow suit. I still can’t see myself wearing them around town, or even to workout (well, maybe actually), but I really love styling them for music events! For this post I decided to make a small collection of some of the brands that have stood out to me lately, in some truly eye popping designs. I generally like lots of color and abstract or geometric designs that are more blocky than fine or detailed (although it depends on the artwork). I can’t even recall exactly how I ran across some of these brands…I think Teeki popped up while I was searching far and wide for the perfect Onzie legging, and I’m pretty sure Mahiku and Sadhana were both followers on Twitter. Luna Jai was brought to my attention by a friend, because the name is so close to my DJ alter ego/name, Luna Jay! Kind of funny how that one worked out. TUYA (Turn Up Your Awesome) is a brand I discovered at Lucidity Festival and has a great charitable cause attached to it. Onzie is definitely a favorite…I wrote a lot about them on a past post, here! Most of the styles from the brand that appear in this post are still available across the internet. Onzie is actually the brand that really made me see why some of these leggings cost as much as they do…the quality is impossible to explain until you try one on for yourself! See a photo in my Onzie leggings below. Either way, I like all of these designs, and there are a lot more where these came from, so be sure to check out these brands individually, as most also have other athletic pieces such as sports bras, outerwear, etc.

Physique By Gypsy05
I’ve been a big fan of Gypsy05 for quite some time now, since its inception in 2005. Back then, it was their beautifully basic, organic cotton maxi dresses that was up front and center, taking the fashion world by storm. It was *the* maxi dress to be seen in for several summers in a row. In fact, I loved it so much I had my bridesmaids wear them for my wedding in 2011! My husband’s dad’s side of the family is Greek, and this dress had the perfect Athena look to them without breaking the banks of my girls (I never understood the point of doing that). Many of them still wear the dress to this day! Shortly after that I became obsessed with their ultra comfortable fleece pants and sweatshirts, as the Juicy Couture tracksuit era seemed to begin its decline. Since 2005, Gypsy05 has continued to release gorgeous trendsetting pieces over and over without skipping a beat! Since activewear has taken a serious place in fashion lately, with many people wearing it as everyday apparel, Gypsy05 has taken the next step and released Physique, a brand new activewear line! The line is made up with three pieces that come in three different patterns and colors each: the Fleur Active T-Back Crop Top, Fleur Active Capri Pant, and my favorite, the Fleur Active Full Length Pant with block color paneling on the outside of the calves. I LOVE the charcoal print with the magenta paneling on the left below! Each piece is constructed in Hollywood, California of recycled polyester and spandex, with eco-friendly dye processes and materials.
