Women everywhere, no matter the size, always know the struggle of finding jeans that fit. Fortunately, ever since premium denim became popular in the early 2000s, several brands have drastically made that process a little less painful due to improved fits and fabrics that better form to your shape, but to say this issue has completely been remedied would be a bit of a stretch (no pun intended). This is especially the case if you have a more muscular or curvy build, and with the rise of weightlifting as an incredible and beneficial workout for women, a few brands have stepped up to the plate to make the denim world a bit more inclusive. Fran Denim has been one of my top brands that are made fit more ample shapes, as I am naturally a bit muscular but also strength train. I’ve reviewed a few pairs myself (see one here, and here…the second being my favorite) so I can definitely vouch for them! Another great pair that also fits the bill is Barbell, but I’ll have to give them their own post soon (it’s about time I highlight them again anyhow). With the summer being upon us and the subject matter being the aforementioned brand, I thought I’d share some new shorts for muscular women from Fran Denim.
It’s always so amazing to me how different each pair of jeans are when the majority of the population still sees a pair of jeans like a typical blue piece of workwear. Premium denim has definitely come a long way since they emerged on the market and blew up in the early 2000s, and of course creativity is one of the major factors that keeps competition real and the best brands on top. Racing stripes are one of those cool designs that I’ve had my eyes on for a long time—I can’t really recall exactly when they became popular but I know it was a few years ago sometime. I’m going to make an educated guess that they came to be around the time activewear as streetwear grabbed hold of the market and gave denim a bit of extra competition! I failed to add a pair of jeans with side stripes for quite awhile, until I got to review the above pair for Mavi. I absolutely love this sporty looking style! It also reminds me of my days in high school marching band…which came to mind when I was coming up with the concept of writing about 21 side stripe skinny jeans to march you through the summer!
Being as obsessed with denim as I am, and having reviewed denim for Denimology and this blog since 2014, I have many denim styles. Of course, the classic blue jean takes up most of them since it’s the most common (and let me say, there’s still a ton of variety), as well as my all time absolute favorite wash, faded black. However, sometimes it’s fun to shake it up a little with a statement piece! Usually the thought of a chunky piece of sparkly jewelry pops up when thinking of such a thing, or maybe some eye catching heels. For me though, I often opt for a fun pair of printed jeans as something different to spice up an outfit when I feel like I’m in a style rut!
Summer…or Spring. Same difference in several places right? Winter is over and it’s time to warm up. It goes without saying that just about all denim out there is made for year-round wear, but I know white denim isn’t normally trusted in the rainy, muddy months for obvious reasons…unless maybe you’re taking them on a Grecian vacation to escape the cold. White also helps reflect the sun a bit to keep you cooler! If you’re one to never wear white after Labor Day, now’s also the time to stock up on your white denim to get as much wear out of the year as you can (although if you ask me, that rule is pretty bunk and based on archaic, class-based rules that might make you forget it for good). Either way, white denim has a nice ethereal clean look to it, and as a neutral shade it can go with anything to polish off your look. Whether or not you’re afraid of trying white denim, every denim enthusiast should have one or two pieces to shake up your style every now and then for any occasion!
I get so excited seeing more of my all-time top favorite denim brands doing their best to go sustainable! For those who don’t know, denim has been such a guilty pleasure for me—I love denim, but the manufacturing process is quite dirty. It takes a ton of water and chemicals to get those worn-in fades we all like so much, and then we get into the pesticides used with growing the crops and the amount of land that is necessary to produce all the cotton needed. Joe’s, Patagonia, Reformation, Liverpool and Everlane are all brands that are revamping or have revamped their production to help support a healthier planet. In 2018, J BRAND released their first ever sustainable capsule collection, and they’ve just followed it up with another big step!
If you’ve been reading my blog for long enough now, or paying attention to the increasing awareness and numerous brands that have stood up to make a change in apparel manufacturing, you might already know about how dirty of an industry it can be. From CO2 emissions to water usage to fabric waste and so much more, players within the fashion industry have a lot of work laid out in front of them to clean up their act. I’m so glad, however, that this isn’t such a hard concept to grasp anymore, since as mentioned, more and more brands are either working on it or have already revamped their practices. Reformation is one of those brands and it’s about time I give them a proper shout out!
Joe’s is one of those premium denim brands where you really cannot go wrong! The denim market is so incredibly saturated, with emerging brands facing the challenge of finding a stand-out brand image and niche, and existing brands being constantly challenged to reinvent themselves as the industry changes to stay on top of new innovations and demands. Joe’s has been around since 2001 at the height of the premium denim craze, when other names like 7 For All Mankind and True Religion were seemingly instant household names and popular celebrity favorites. Every piece I’ve had from Joe’s has been a pleasure to wear, and they are also one of the first big denim brands to cater to more curvier shapes (regardless of actual size). Spring is just around the corner already, and Joe’s has released a great collection of jeans made for those who are looking for a better fit. I personally have a curvier shape from weight training, so I am excited to share these new curvy denim styles for Spring from Joe’s Jeans!
As you may already know, my main focus on this blog has slowly but surely fine-tuned itself into a focus of eco friendly and sustainable style over the years. This is partly due to the fact that denim brands (which I was initially focusing on the most and still love) gradually realized how dirty the wash process is, as did the apparel industry in general, and as awareness grew they finally did their part to make necessary changes. It’s definitely a passion so I’ve decided to keep sustainable style a prominent focus here! It’s easy for me to find sustainable non-denim items to write about, but it’s still tougher to create consistent posts in the world of sustainable denim, which is why I am super happy to present to you a new discovery: these new eco friendly jeans from Liverpool!
All of us remember the classic overalls from our childhood years, even if you weren’t someone who owned a pair. I did! At the time I didn’t care at all about fashion, and wore them mostly for the convenience and comfort. I still remember my short pair. As we all know, trends seem to pop up from nostalgic times of the past—just look at all the styles that have re-emerged from the ’80s and early ’90s over the last few years! In 2014, the overall made a huge comeback, and although its popularity wavered since then, it appears it’s still going pretty strong. However, it’s evolved a lot since that re-emergence, now coming in more refined, skinny and fashionable options rather than the typical frumpy outdoorsy workwear look. I’ll admit I do not own a pair, as it’s one of those trends that I’m not sure about personally. That doesn’t matter to me much though, because it’s still awesome to me to watch what gets released every season, and I will say that there are some people who truly can rock them (I’m looking at you, Kate Bosworth and Miranda Kerr)!
I’m not sure how much people really pay attention to bizarre fashion trend reports (or trend reports in general), but I’m sure while perusing Facebook many of you have seen the crazy new denim “fads” over the years involving styles that you’d be pretty sure nobody would be caught dead in (but I bet you also realize lately that humans continue to blow our minds, so you react negatively to it despite your doubt). Denim has been one of those simple, basic wardrobe staples that I fell in love with due to the wide variety of artistic takes that different brands came up with, and for a heck of a long time, it was great, right? It was all about lifting the butt, elongating the legs or lengthening the torso—no woman was without at least one or two pairs of favorite jeans in her closet, and we were always looking for the next flattering pair. No matter what though, whether you like any of the other later trends such as frayed hems, mom jeans, cropped flares, jeggings or printed styles, everything always came back to the traditional, classic blue jean. Every successful denim brand knows this, and the emergence of favorable cult favorite vintage cuts and fabrics further perpetuated this truth. However…we still constantly see these attention-grabbing headlines featuring completely out-there denim styles that are being touted as a new “trend” somehow. If you know what I’m talking about, I’m talking about the inside-out jeans, Topshop’s mom jeans with clear plastic knee cutouts, Natasha Zinko High Waist Double Waistband Jeans, Carmar Denim’s “Invisible Jeans,” Y/Project’s garter belt jeans and Opening Ceremony’s number with detachable legs that morphs into a pair of high cut shorts. Clearly, these somehow sell, but is it all hype, and are people really willing to spend $400 on something that is? It’s easy to conclude that in such a saturated market, these brands are simply taking the clickbait route to another level to garner attention and don’t expect any of these creations to become “the next big trend.” However, I’d say that it’s a trend in itself that these far out designs continue to be manufactured and blasted out all over the media. Does this foreshadow a new turn for the denim industry, where it’s gotten increasingly more difficult to come up with original ideas? Is denim finally beginning to see a lackluster market presence as everyone opts for their best, most comfiest and flattering pair of yoga leggings?
