The cool thing about fashion and style is it has always been known to blur lines and break barriers ever since its inception. It continues to grow, evolve and remake itself along with changes in politics, pop culture, and popular tastes. Fashion naturally is meant to ignore all the rules on its own, but you can’t say it’s not often influenced by changing trends within target demographics, of course. Lately, awareness of the wastefulness of fast fashion has spread amongst style-conscious shoppers everywhere, while millenials are rising up against personal labels, boundaries, exclusivity and judgement. Whether or not you like to think of fashion’s ever-changing climate as being politically influenced, it’s always been about freedom of individual expression.
Unisex fashion has been slowly growing in popularity over the years, with Dapper Boi and Zara being great examples of brands who helped pave the way with androgynous apparel collections. Even bloggers like Leandra Medine Man Repeller helped introduce and propel this concept into the light in the fashion world. Jeans that are made for the individual rather than being defined by a gender are a cool alternative to the usual way men and women are marketed to, for those who don’t care about being told what they should be wearing or what kinds of tastes they should have based on their biology. H&M is the latest to introduce their own line of the sort, with their Denim United capsule collection. The interesting thing about it is that it isn’t just made out of jeans, but also overalls, dresses, shirts and more. It truly blends men’s and women’s fashion into one, taking things to an entirely new level.
Of course, my favorite part here is that H&M has expanded their sustainable efforts into this new unisex denim line. Each piece is made either out of recycled denim or organic materials. Even though my personal style is a bit different, I can definitely appreciate new pathways that brands choose to take with their designs and ambitions, and it’s always a win to me if it’s friendly to our environment!
