Stay Active with Sustainable Footwear from Allbirds

Depending on where we all reside and whatever laws are in place in our areas for the current pandemic, many of us are reinventing the way we stay active to stay in shape while our gyms are closed. Personally, I am already a runner alongside my gym activities, but I found myself hitting the pavement more often than ever. Thankfully I live in an area where it’s fairly easy to avoid people and stay six feet apart, so that isn’t a problem. But I digress…I know several people have picked up running for the first time in order to stay sane during these tough times! Finding the right shoes can be difficult if you aren’t sure what you are doing, but I prefer going with basic, lightweight, no-fluff options for the best performance. My trusty Asics are nearing their retirement age, and I’ve been keeping my eyes out for the next pair. Enter Allbirds, a sustainable footwear brand that I just discovered, that offers earth-friendly running shoes without all the bells and whistles.

We don’t hear much about sustainable footwear these days (as opposed to apparel), but Allbirds has it down. The brand was created by Tim Brown, a New Zealand native, who was already familiar with the amazing sustainable qualities of marino wool, and went on to fill a void in the world of footwear. Along with running shoes, this brand also creates comfortable sustainable footwear for running errands or just lounging around, like casual sneakers, flats and boat shoes. Everything is either made with merino wool or eucalyptus tree fiber, recycled plastic bottles (one bottle equals one pair of shoelaces), castor bean oil (to increase the natural content in their insoles), and recycled cardboard for their packaging. In addition, Allbirds is a certified B Corp, and donates slightly used footwear to Soles4Souls® to help those in need.

I totally want to try out Allbird’s sustainable running shoes, the Tree Dashers! These are rigorously tested through thousands of miles with pro athletes to ensure premium stability, durability and support. Seriously, there’s a lot of sweet technology involved, despite their simplicity. Allbird shoes also come in a variety of colors (including a few limited edition shades and color combos). Check them all out for yourself!

“Our Tree Dasher is carbon neutral thanks to sustainable practices, like using natural materials and buying offsets. But before we balance the emissions, its footprint starts at 9.0 kg CO2e. Think of this measurement like a nutrition label for your closet.”

“In New Zealand, sheep outnumber humans about six to one. Thanks to their wool, our process uses 60% less energy than materials used in typical synthetic shoes.”

“We work with leading organizations like ZQ Merino to ensure our wool is held to high standards of farming, land management and animal welfare.”

“One recycled plastic bottle equals one pair of Allbirds laces. Reincarnation is a beautiful thing.”

“Our packaging is made from 90% recycled cardboard. Because every box deserves a second chance.”

“The footwear industry often overlooks Mother Nature’s materials in favor of cheaper, synthetic alternatives. We think it’s time to change that.”
