Knee Length Bermuda Shorts for Work or Weekends

Knee Length Bermuda Shorts for Work or Weekends

I guess it appears I’ll be swinging one post a week for a little while here, as things are getting quite slammed over in my neck of the woods…and I have a big vacation in August to look forward to (thank God FINALLY). The summer months are always pretty busy with it being the time I’m preparing new product on a website at work, along with the usual fun events and DJ gigs. With the latter, I love wearing whatever the heck I want and getting creative. Shorty shorts are never out of the question when the sun is blaring! However, for the former, although my job is pretty lax when it comes to personal style, I still prefer a more modest option. When it’s REALLY sweltering I’ll opt for a skirt, but I’m not much of a skirt person. Not every gal has a thigh gap so chafing is always an issue, and I usually prefer the security that a pair of jeans or shorts gives!

Olive Green is the Color of Spring

I know, I was just as surprised as you are, I guess. Usually Fall is the time for earthy, neutral colors such as browns, burgundies, and olive greens…but I’ve seen more than one retailer pushing the latter as a new Spring color. I’m fine with it, as I’m not much of a bright pastelley color person at all, and olive happens to be one of my favorite colors. It’s nice to find more toned down alternatives! Most people probably associate olive green as a military shade, and military pieces are indeed included in these new Spring marketing campaigns. They are also usually more lightweight which offers more breezy options for the warmer weather!

Hanging out with Nok Nok

Hanging out with Nok Nok

Tee: Basic Who’s There tee by Nok Nok, Jacket: Cropped Puffer Jacket from American Eagle Outfitters (Similar here), Jeans: Billie Zipper Jean in Lose Your Marbles by Black Orchid, Boots: Madden Girl (Similar Here), Bag: Peace & Love Bag by Nok Nok, Necklace: Third Eye Pinecones

Being a huge fan of music, I always gravitate to apparel brands that are inspired by rock n’ roll and the like. Just a little over a year ago, you may remember me bringing up Nok Nok, a London-based denim brand that excels in hand-painted denim inspired by “vibrant subcultures mixed with the freedom, hippie vibe and nightlife from Ibiza, the Spanish island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea.” Of course this caught my attention, being a DJ myself and dreaming of making the notorious party capital of Ibiza a vacation destination some day. Angel NokoNoko is the designer behind the brand Nok Nok, and he and his sister Montse are both from Ibiza. Angel is actually an electronic music DJ himself! So, as you can see, I immediately felt like I could relate to this brand.

The So Black Denim Collection at Black Orchid

Of all the different shades of denim, your traditional blue wash seems to symbolize toughness…typically those who wear them don’t fear having to throw them in the wash, or accidentally spilling something on them while out on the town. At least, not quite as much as their rich black or white counterparts. With white denim it’s obvious. They are easy to get dirty and sometimes yellow over several washes (although, several brands have created stain-repellant white denim such as Old Navy, Joe’s and others). With black denim, the rich over-saturated black shade will often fade over several wash cycles and end up more of a dark grey. Now, if you’ve been reading my blog recently you know I do absolutely love the faded black look! However, if you shell out a good amount of cash for a pair of black denim, it makes sense for you to expect it to stay that way.

Stepping Around in Grey Flares

Stepping Around in Grey Flares - Front View 1

Stepping Around in Grey Flares

I really grew into the flares this year…I still wear skinny jeans just about 24/7, but I love vintage looks and I was happy to see the flare jean come back this Spring! Of course there are plenty of variations of your typical blue washed flare (Don’t get me wrong, I loved the pair I reviewed for Marc Allison!), and I’ve seen several white ones, some colored…but never any grey versions! I was perusing Hautelook as I usually do one morning about a month or two ago when they were having a sale on Black Orchid Denim, and laid my eyes on these babies, the Black Orchid Trouser Jean in Cosmic! I had to have them, as usually now if I pay for anything in my denim collection nowadays it has to be something unique that doesn’t look like the pairs I already own (well, most of the time at least). They’ve been sitting amongst my others for awhile and I’m not exactly sure why, but yesterday I decided to give them a go! Black Orchid is so comfortable and fits my athletic shape pretty well, but these flares fit them better than the two skinny styles I own from the brand. I guess it makes sense, as flares are usually seen as more flattering on curvier figures. But anyway, I love that they have some distressing and rip-and-repair details, and they are definitely nice and warm as California FINALLY cools off a bit! I wore them with my BCBGeneration Martano lace up booties (similar pair at the bottom of this post) which offer just enough platform so these aren’t scraping on the ground. I also wore them awhile back for this post, and I also wore them for the aforementioned Marc Allison review. I think they are a 34″ inseam so they aren’t too long, but still! They are a new favorite for sure. The jacket was handed to me by my sister, who was going to pass it on to Goodwill, and it’s by Miss Posh, but it was purchased years ago.

Happy Halloween!!

Happy Halloween!!

Happy Halloween!!

This is certainly my favorite time of the year. Any chance to dress up and have a blast doing so is a chance I’ll take…and what better time of the year than Halloween is there? I honestly think there should be two Halloweens a year (well, there’s always Summerween, which my sister-in-law and her new husband always celebrate out in Chicago). Anyway, it’s not only the dressing up (and the awesome allure of anything dark and creepy) that makes this my favorite holiday…but the smell of pumpkins…oh man. That smell wafting from the porches of everyone down the street who still use real candles in their jack-o-lanterns…of course many would argue the barrage of pumpkin-flavored treats is what makes the Fall as anticipated as it is every year, but I don’t have too much of a sweet tooth. Give me some pumpkin cornbread or good old fashion pumpkin pie though, and I’m set! At the risk of any surprises being foiled, I won’t say what I’m dressing up as this year…that will have to be for another post! So instead, I’ll share a photo of my cute new little cat that my hubby and I adopted this October (and no, not intentionally for the holiday). Meet Larry!

Of course, what is a post on a style blog without something on-topic? So here’s a cool deal which has seriously been seriously calling my name for the last few days…31% off everything (yes, including sale!) at one of my favorite brands ever, American Eagle Outfitters. If you liked my post about the new Denim X technology, and my two reviews (The Hi-Rise Jegging in Inky Dark and Sky High Jegging in Cold Blue Destroy) now’s a great time to try a pair out for yourself! Enjoy, if you so please!

It’s not surprise, they’ve perfected the tie dye look to fit the tastes of the modern style-conscious individual…and their fleece is the SOFTEST ever! Use code “GypsyTreats” to receive the discount, which is valid through 11/2.

As far as the denim world goes, Black Orchid Denim is offering 30% off. This celebrity favorite offers a wide range of traditional denim styles as well as several unique ones. While I don’t own any of their jeans yet (and hope to review some soon), I’ve admired them from afar for quite some time now! Use “WICKED30” for your discount.
