I can agree that denim may not always be your go-to material during the heat of the summer, unless we’re talking about shortie shorts. Those are definitely some of my favorite pieces that come out of hibernation to enjoy beach days, pool parties or just outdoor outings with friends. But not everyone resides in regions that are too scorching for denim, and some of us just love our favorite jeans too much to part with them at any time throughout the year. Looser fitting items are often a bit more comfortable, and so are jeans with rips or distressing which helps to let the breeze in and help you stay cooler. Whatever our denim preferences are when the weather warms, I am getting some awesome summer denim vibes from Shopbop!
I know I was on a roll reminiscing on the wonder that was the Global Eclipse Gathering a few weeks ago, sharing anything that has to do with independent and sustainable apparel designers I discovered there, but I can’t neglect the denim aspect of my blog, can I? I at least try to keep a healthy variety! I am still always keeping my eyes on what’s new in the world of denim, and one thing I noticed is the competition between the still-growing athleisure industry is still going fairly strong. At music festivals, I never wear jeans and opt for leggings, but in my everyday life I could never give up my beloved denim collection. Although I’ve grown a taste for the vintage denim trend that’s grown lately in a response to all of the supersoft and stretchy fabric technologies out there, it’s still amazing to me how comfortable these denim fabrics are. They definitely give a lot of the leggings on the market a run for their money!
First off, this is a bit of a crazy week for me, since my yearly April destination, Lucidity Festival, is this weekend! I won’t be posting again until sometime next week (maybe later, to allow for a little decompression). It’s definitely a much-needed vacation, and a great time to enjoy welcoming in the Springtime! Also, I’ll be DJing this time around, so I am super excited!
There’s been a long standing assumption that skinny jeans are only for…well, skinny people. Thankfully over the years that’s changed, and several denim brands have stepped up to the plate to prove that notion wrong. Jeans have become more stretchy, more form fitting, more curve hugging than ever, and fits have changed a bit to cater to those who have more ample shapes. For me, I’m thankful because I’ve always had a more athletic shape, as I am a bit of a fitness buff! I lift, I run, I HIIT, I do a lot. Fortunately, I’m slim enough that most jeans will fit me anyway, but I still run across that issue of waist gap or my thighs being a bit too muscular every now and then. I am extremely thankful for my experiences of reviewing jeans for Denimology, as this has opened my eyes to the real meat of the denim industry, and I am not sure I would have discovered these amazing fits for bodies like mine if I hadn’t had that opportunity!
Colored denim is always so fun to break up the collection of traditional blues, greys and blacks in my closet. I usually associate colored denim with the Springtime, as bright colors are usually a bit more expected around the season of blooming flowers and green hills. However, during the Fall, colors are just as vibrant (if not more) with the changing leaves! Shades of brown, red, orange, tan, or gold are definitely perfect for tucking into boots or hiding under long tunic sweaters (or however you like to dress up your denim when the weather turns to cold). I can’t believe Fall is already well under way and Winter is just around the corner, but especially for us here in California, winter doesn’t actually seem to officially hit until a month or two after the solstice…and Fall always takes its time as well as October is still one of the hottest months of the year for us! In that regard, styling for the seasons is sometimes a bit different in our neck of the woods.
It’s already that time of the year…where the heck did Halloween go? Screw that, where the hell did 2016 go?! Either way, it’s once again turkey day, and time for some of the best sales of the year. I’m always subscribed to my favorite brands’ and retailers’ newsletters in anticipation for such things, and just like I do every time, I figured I would share my favorites with you. There’s definitely far too many out there to include all here, but these are the first that I have seen, and I will be adding any new ones that pop up to this list as the week goes on! So whether you plan to party, to shop, or just relax and eat to your heart’s content this turkey day, here are some choice sales just in case you catch a bit of the shopping bug over the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving!
The sleek, leatherlike look is always in, regardless of the season. I always like edgy looks, or pieces that look like they just came off of a long motorcycle ride or rock concert (from the stage side, of course) to balance out more casual outfits. Leather jeans were always kind of appealing to me, but I never owned any; partially because of the price, but also because of the fear of washing them or feeling too suffocated. There are always vegan leather options, but in my past experiences they only felt kind of clammy as the day went on, again not offering a whole lot in the breathability department. I know there are a lot of awesome new options, but I haven’t quite dipped back into that realm yet. However, when coated jeans emerged onto the scene, and I finally got to review a pair or two, I found a new alternative that I knew I could love!
Coated denim (also known as “waxed denim”) is regular denim with a layer of acrylic, resin, polyurethane or pigment. When done on a black jean, it really looks like a beautiful leather piece! Using denim allows them to be more stretchy, soft, and breathable for a comfortable all-day wear. I really love wearing them under a casual tee shirt or out on the town or a DJ gig! They can be kind of tough to wear in warmer weather, so now that Fall is here and Winter is just around the corner, my coated denim will emerge once again. The extra coated layer offers a bit of warmth, and I think they just look way too cool under boots. Most come in black, but there are some jewel-toned alternatives out there, which of course are great for Fall to match with the season’s colors! Some of my favorite coated denim pieces include already-loved denim styles like distressing and rips, and moto or zipper detailing. Here are a few pieces I’ve gathered to share with you that I think are great examples of coated denim.
What do you think? What are your favorites?
When shopping for black jeans in the past, I was always looking for the most jet black, dark and saturated (wash wise) pair I could find. I mean, it’s fair to say that’s a fundamental piece for anyone’s closet, and I do own a pair or two of those. However, I always end up saving those only for special occasions for fear of washing them and having them fade. Now, I know I have posted in the past about some pretty awesome fadeless black jeans from brands such as Level 99 and DSTLD in the past, but I haven’t owned any of those yet and still was afraid to wash the nice black pairs I have and love.
It’s yet another long weekend, and yet another great round of sales! I plan to spend my next few days resting, going to a few concerts and clubs in Hollywood, and spending time with friends. I’m fortunate to live in California where it’s going to be nice and warm all weekend, but I know some parts the country have some inclement weather looming overhead…and I’m sure if I lived in those areas I’d be more inclined to stay at home shopping! Whatever you plan to do this weekend, if you are aching for a new pair of jeans, I’ve put together some of the best premium denim sales I could find. Enjoy, and be safe!
