The TOMS Animal Initiative
I don’t need to say much to introduce TOMS…we all know their huge humanitarian efforts and their One for One® campaign, with the brand helping a person in need with every product purchased. I’ve posted about their charitable efforts such as their contribution for World Sight Day and TOMS Roasting Co. for Clean Water. Now, TOMS is pairing up with two partners in an effort to support animal conservation and end illegal poaching. The TOMS Animal Initiative, in partnership with Clinton Foundation and Wildlife Conservation Society (and their 96 Elephants campaign, named after the fact that 96 elephants are estimated to be killed a day by poachers), has released a line of footwear to save African elephants who are bring killed at an alarming rate by poachers for their ivory tusks. TOMS and its partners are working to stop the killing, trafficking, and demand for these tusks.
TOMS Chief Animal Lover Heather Mycoskie was inspired to begin the initiative when she learned of the plight of the wild lion and their threat of extinction. “I felt like there was so much we could do by coming together to save these and other majestic animals,” says Heather. “Combining my love for animals and my love for TOMS made perfect sense.”
It appears the women’s versions of these shoes have sold out, however, one reviewer states the youth sizes work just fine! She states, “Size 5 youth is equivalent to a size 7 women, so if you don’t want to wait for women’s sizes to return, this is a great way to go. The sole is much sturdier on these than the adult sizes.” So have at it! Hopefully TOMS will restock the women’s footwear for this initiative soon. Items are selling out incredibly fast, so hopefully they will!
TOMS first began its initiative by partnering with the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo to protect a population of mountain gorillas that are threatened by habitat destruction and poaching. These green Classics below represent this effort.

TOMS Celebrates World Sight Day
Most of us are already familiar with the amazing humanitarian efforts of TOMS shoes…mainly their One for One® campaign, in which the brand will give one pair of shoes to a child in need with every shoe purchase or one week of clean water to a person in need with every bag of coffee purchased! TOMS fans also enjoy the collaborations they have with artists and musicians, like the recent Paul Van Dyk partnership. I’m subscribed to the TOMS newsletter and I love always watching how active they are in their cause—there is always something cool going on. Now, with World Sight Day coming up on October 9, TOMS is applying their One for One® campaign to all eyewear on their website. However, in this case, with every eyewear purchase, a person in need of sight restoration or medical assistance in order to return to their jobs or school, which otherwise were a struggle because of visual impairment.
TOMS is partnered with organizations like the Helen Keller International’s ChildSight program and Marium Eye Hospital to provide these life-changing services to those in need, and the success stories are so moving! I myself have contact lenses (I can’t see worth crap without them), and I cannot imagine living somewhere without the care we are so fortunate to have available to us. Oftentimes the fashion world can be a little self-centered at times, so companies like TOMS are very refreshing. TOMS wants fans to get involved through Instagram, asking everyone to snap a photo of something that represents what sight means to them, and posting it with the hashtag #GIVESIGHT.

TOMS x Paul Van Dyk Women’s Classics in Galaxy
TOMS Pairs Up with Paul Van Dyk
I just adore those team players in the highly-saturated and competitive fashion world that stay true to their strong humanitarian beliefs and never back down. The well-known TOMS has been in the game for quite some time, donating a pair of shoes to a child in need in need with every shoe purchase through their “One for One” campaign (to this day, they have donated over 10 million pairs of shoes!!!). To expand their efforts, they are constantly forming collaborations and planning new products to continue the cause of making the world a better place, one step at a time. This time, TOMS has paired up with superstar DJ and humanitarian Paul Van Dyk to create the limited edition TOMS x Paul van Dyk Galaxy Collection, which is “inspired by global citizenship”, and made up of these beautiful galaxy-print shoes and sunglasses emblazoned with the PVD logo. As an electronic music fan and DJ myself, I’m not a huge PVD fan, but I can appreciate his longevity and longtime influence in the music scene from day one, and being a humanitarian just gives him extra props from me.
Either way, I was immediately attracted to the print on these shoes! I still own no TOMS, unfortunately, but oh wow, I need these. Pronto…and how can I feel guilty if it’s all going to a good cause?
